When they arrived on the outskirts of the Underworld, they were exhausted and decided to take a rest on a rock. They left Helen to Theseus’ mother, Aethra, and began their journey into the Underworld to capture Persephone. Pirithous however, had the audacity to pick Persephone, the prized wife of Hades, King of the Underworld. Since she wasn’t of age yet, Theseus intended to keep her till she was. Theseus would choose Helen of Troy and kidnapped her. One day, during his visit to Athens, Pirithous found out that Theseus’ wife, Phaedra, had died and coincidentally, his own wife Hippodamia had died too.īoth men were of a certain age and they decided that they would want to remarry. The mortals, Theseus and Pirithous were very close friends in Greek Mythology. With that said, there were two who were foolish enough to get on Hades’ bad side and paid for eternity. The Enemies of HadesĪs previously mentioned, not many were brave enough to make the King of the Underworld their enemy. He did so and Hades fulfilled his part of the bargain.Ĭerberus would later return to the Underworld after he had freed himself from Hercules as the latter reached Godhood. The God said that he could claim Cerberus as his own if the demi-god managed to defeat the three-headed dog without the use of weapons. With that said, he would later be given to Hercules as the God had made a bet with him. He would savagely eat any soul that tried to escape the Underworld and get to the land of the living. Cerberus guarded the gates from the dead that would try to escape and any of the living that tried to enter without his master’s permission. He was very friendly to his master and surprisingly friendly to the dead that would cross over into the Underworld to get to the afterlife. Contrary to belief, Cerberus wasn’t such a monster as modern depictions would make him out to be. He was extremely faithful to the King of the Underworld and would be depicted bathing along the banks of the river Styx. The Primary job of Cerberus was to be the watchdog of the Underworld serving under Hades. Though his heritage was so, that didn’t stop Hades from making him his gatekeeper in the Underworld. The Greeks had great respect for their dogs and the relationship between Hades and Cerberus showed that respect.Ĭerberus was the child of Typhoeus, the Titan that shook all the Gods and forced them into hiding. Just as every dog is man’s best friend, Cerberus was also one of the most loyal and greatest allies of Hades. Not everyone was cool with Hades, but they sure were glad to have someone as powerful as him on their side. He had a fearsome arsenal that could destroy the earth and the power to control all the dead, man, god, monster, or beast. He had terrifying powers as well as one of the most powerful beings during his time. This made it so that he rarely ever gets a chance to make enemies in the first place. Hades spent a majority of his time in the Underworld, rarely ever appearing in the mortal realm or Mount Olympus. That wasn’t the only reason the Olympians are his allies though. No one would desire for the offspring to suffer in the afterlife. Though the Olympians are truly immortal, some of their offspring are still capable of dying and this would give Hades an advantage over them. You would be wise to stay on his good side lest you desire an eternity of damnation in the afterlife. Hades had control over the Greek version of purgatory, heaven, hell, and the isle of reincarnation all in the form of Elysium. Even then, they would never think of staying on his bad side and would do all they could to be allies with the King of the Underworld. Many disliked Hades as he ruled over the dead and it was considered to be unholy to do so. Unfortunately, some made that mistake and they paid horribly with their lives. Rarely was there anyone that wanted to be friends with the King of the Underworld, Hades, but no one was foolish enough to make an enemy out of him. He does however have enemies though as Theseus and Pirithous tried to steal his wife from him. Though Hades was disliked by the other Gods for his position, the entire Greek Pantheon was still considered his allies as he never made enemies with them. Being the King of the Underworld meant that Hades was seen in a very unfavorable way which begs the question, who are the allies and enemies of Hades? Everyone has their best of friends and worst of enemies, who are they when talking about the King of the Underworld?
